Geek Tip: Find Your Way on Public Transit With GoogleMaps 30 min 9 sec ago by geeksugar 12 Views - 1 comment I use public transit every day and rarely drive, unless I'm going out of town. And as much as I love my city, their trip planners are not as helpful as they could be. So where do you go for some bus- and train-hopping advice? You head on over to GoogleMaps, of course! GoogleMaps has an awesome public-transportation database that tells you which bus to get. Enter your start and

New Google Maps feature: The GoogleMap Maker
The scene: You open up Google Maps to find directions before heading off to that holiday trip. Of course, who wouldn’t want to prepare by acquainting yourself to the “lay of the land”. Google Maps, you think, is a great tool (and truly, it is!) except that this time, what you wanted turned up blank. Not even a road, bridge or some useful landmark. Oh well, you say–you’ll just get a community map when you reach the local airport. Now when you get back, you think, hey wouldn’t it be helpful if y

Carnival of Mobilists on LBS
While I'm turning into a big believer about location-based capabilities in mobile phones (GPS, maps etc), I'm much less convinced by the argument for monetisable location services. I can quite imagine buying a Nokia device which comes with 4GB of global maps built in, plus GPS. I can quite imagine continuing to use Google Maps on mobile, with its clever autolocation capability. But I can't imagine ever wanting "local search", or paying for "where is my nearest X", or trusting any "local" resta

Is Google Maps GIS? Neogeography in The Cloud
In the blogsphere (see High Earth Orbit and BlinkGeo) there is discussion going on about the role of Google Maps in GIS and indeed if Google Maps can be seen as GIS? Google Maps (in our view) changed everything in the online geographic world. Where once data was restricted to slow and cumbersome servers from large GIS companies, Google came along and made it easy. Google provided a base layer in essence on which to overlay information, a base layer that in the UK at least was hugely important

Interesting new idea to improve communication on the B.B.C. website, a broadband speed test which then allows contributors to mark their speed on a Google Map, unhappy to say that the speed I pay for it not the one I get. Share This

Google Earth powerful, though tricky to use, share
USHUAIA, Argentina (AP) — Online photo albums I had prepared for family and friends weren’t capturing the essence of my travels to the southern reaches of the world. Then a light bulb clicked as I was exploring Google Earth: Why not use that? Google Earth is a mapping product much more powerful than the typical Web-based map service. Applying mathematical algorithms to actual satellite and aerial images, with help from topographical data collected from the space shuttle, the free software le

Grand Theft Auto IV Scouted & Mapped
Grand Theft Auto IV Scouted & Mapped Posted by Jp Lolin on May 3, 2008 If you read Dial or Gadget by any chance, then you know that I cover Google pretty extensively. Today I found it strange to find an entry for it among my gaming feeds, but it was really there. The search engine giant has deemed that the Grand Theft Auto locale Liberty City is popular enough to deserve its own map, so here it is: Liberty City via Google Maps. Feel free to post your own contributions to the busy metropolis.
